LiteraryHype Podcast is thrilled to welcome Kellan Lutz. He played Emmett in the Twilight movies, based on Stephenie Meyer's books. Twilight turns 20 in 2025, so we're looking back at what makes the series special, how the cast's relationships have held through the years, and what prequel or sequel he'd want to see.

Twilight is turning 20. It's time to celebrate. Hi, and welcome to Literary Hype. I am Stephanie, your literary hype woman. It's this podcast is not an author, but it is someone tied to bookish projects. And really, the main one that we're going to talk about today is Twilight. Kelli Lutz played Emmett Cullen in the Twilight saga. And this book is now turning 20 years old.
00;00;26;01 - 00;00;43;12
Speaker 1
I don't know how time has flown that fast. This book is down 20 years old. But I got the chance to talk to Kellan at Ten Expo Chicago, about 20 years of Twilight, and what it's been like to be a part of that ride for so long. That's another book is Questions. So check out this conversation with Kellan Lutz.
00;00;48;18 - 00;00;49;24
Speaker 2
Welcome to Literary Hype.
00;00;50;24 - 00;01;06;00
Speaker 3
You make fun of books to movies. What's it like for you? It's been like 20 years since Twilight, you know? Exactly. And you're still here doing all the comments. What's it like for you to still be a part of this world, to kind of be such a big part of your life?
00;01;06;00 - 00;01;39;13
Speaker 4
So it's for me, like, I love you, I love your action. So to be a part of a project has become a global success. Beloved by so many, and it has transferred to the younger generation. So it's multigenerational right now. Where are you enjoying it? Mothers and fathers get to enjoy their children and their children. And just by coming out, it's really quite special because we weekend a lot of these right when Twilight first aired and went on worldwide tours.
00;01;39;13 - 00;01;49;16
Speaker 4
That was amazing. And The Phantom was unlike anything I expected. And then there's Jackson, who Oh.
00;01;50;25 - 00;01;54;26
Speaker 2
I love my brother. And then you get to come to these and give it back to the.
00;01;54;26 - 00;02;06;02
Speaker 4
Fans because they really are the ones that allowed us to continue enjoying our characters and enjoying this little role and family. So thank you all.
00;02;06;24 - 00;02;15;03
Speaker 3
Let's going to multigenerational is like once they went on Netflix, like we started seeing all the teenagers coming in and it's like.
00;02;15;03 - 00;02;16;15
Speaker 4
A whole new paper and cool.
00;02;17;18 - 00;02;22;14
Speaker 3
So what's it like for you seeing different generations come together over one.
00;02;22;28 - 00;02;44;21
Speaker 4
Book? I just love that people can connect together and in their family and in their households. You know, I know growing up, it's hard for teenagers to connect. Parents aren't cool or that's the typical response. And so with the book series, I remember when it first came out, my sister, my one and only sister, you know, it was read.
00;02;44;21 - 00;02;50;01
Speaker 2
It really teaches a lot of like the weight. And you know what?
00;02;50;05 - 00;03;03;08
Speaker 4
We're just kind of messed up because I feel like Edward is a bit of a gas eater. And I'm like, I don't go more for the Jacob look. Funny, but a nice guy who pursues no, but is just a really great person.
00;03;03;20 - 00;03;07;26
Speaker 2
But when kids are in that dating season.
00;03;07;27 - 00;03;19;14
Speaker 4
And to connect with their parents and the older generation and just share like interest, it's beautiful. It's like one time, you know, going fishing to.
00;03;19;14 - 00;03;25;14
Speaker 2
Do something or you you know, going to nails and even is going to just see the.
00;03;25;14 - 00;03;34;03
Speaker 4
More shared interests you can adapt and look for with your family. And they just connect you clearly.
00;03;34;04 - 00;03;36;02
Speaker 3
You like Jackson since you.
00;03;36;02 - 00;03;39;01
Speaker 4
Just he's dirty. He's a pretty boy.
00;03;40;13 - 00;03;46;14
Speaker 3
So you guys have been doing this together for so long. What's your bond like now compared to how it was when you first film movies?
00;03;46;25 - 00;04;07;03
Speaker 4
I think so much more deeper. I mean, we're better now. When we did those movies like you, Young Box, early twenties, got fame. You know, you got no idea what to do with it. We're very young, you know, we had good anchors. We had good system in our church and our family and house, but it still is a lot of nights.
00;04;07;14 - 00;04;31;04
Speaker 4
And just we now we have awesome lives, awesome marriages, awesome children, awesome family unit. So it's really great to connect people up and a lot of times over. Your families, do these conventions, do family dinners much like we did, we were shooting in the movies where I do dinners with us cause now we're mixing the families and them.
00;04;31;19 - 00;04;32;08
Speaker 4
It's beautiful.
00;04;32;08 - 00;04;40;29
Speaker 3
I guess if we were to convince Stephanie Meyer to write a book about Emmett's perspective, what area of his life would you most want to see explored?
00;04;41;27 - 00;04;55;01
Speaker 4
He was young when he turned, right? So it's it's I think, seen I mean, especially in Gatlinburg, where he got tangled by the bear. I think there's something very beautiful here. Another little town.
00;04;55;16 - 00;05;00;16
Speaker 2
For his records. It's it's unique, unique areas.
00;05;01;08 - 00;05;24;25
Speaker 4
This he is beautiful and just seen what he wanted done. And, you know, if I had a ranch or even a small farm, I mean, it's a terrible place, our land. I wonder if it's yours. I don't know. But it's been a while since I read the book. If he did or not, I would imagine he did. And, you know, it was OK.
00;05;25;16 - 00;05;41;04
Speaker 4
He's alive and talking to Peter, you know, Peter, his character lived for a very long time. And you wonder, like, all the loss, I wonder with our characters who are now you know, many years old. Plus they've witnessed a lot of their loved ones dying and now they have this new.
00;05;41;12 - 00;05;47;24
Speaker 2
Family because but, you know, I wonder if he would ever go back and, you know, and if they ever.
00;05;47;24 - 00;06;11;20
Speaker 4
Want kids, like if they adopted a newborn vampire, do like Stephanie Rowe or if we did like a TV show later on, where are the cars now? We'd have some somebody Warren kiddos our own and have some land and maybe live and go and have our own little business. So it's fun living in Tennessee. They have these pumpkin patch farms.
00;06;11;20 - 00;06;19;15
Speaker 4
You can ride the tractors and see the animals and play in the corn. And I imagine Rosalee may have something like that through the community.
00;06;20;09 - 00;06;26;08
Speaker 2
One of the my favorite ideas for the Secret People is are they going to go with me and Rosalee?
00;06;26;08 - 00;06;29;15
Speaker 3
It's college years and like following them through college. And every time.
00;06;29;15 - 00;06;35;00
Speaker 4
They went back to, oh my God, why, why are we in high school right now? We just all ready for college. I was like.
00;06;36;23 - 00;06;37;29
Speaker 3
You know why? Since we all.
00;06;37;29 - 00;06;38;22
Speaker 4
Yeah, yeah.
00;06;39;08 - 00;06;42;23
Speaker 3
You know what other books wouldn't you like to be a part of turning into a movie?
00;06;43;09 - 00;07;15;04
Speaker 4
I'm this is quite a few this present darkness but by Frank Brady some awesome authors work on helping them get a movie going about energy. Brian Andrews and Jeff Wilson they have a series called the Shepherd Series that's really beautiful. And Spiritual Warfare led by Navy SEALs. Daniel Suarez is one of my favorite sci fi authors. I think Will Smith is doing his Fox movie, which is.
00;07;15;16 - 00;07;21;07
Speaker 2
So mind blowing that's why.
00;07;22;05 - 00;07;23;06
Speaker 4
I love John Grisham.
00;07;23;16 - 00;07;28;28
Speaker 2
So I would love to do a challenge and synthesis literary looks. Are you hyped about the Bible?
00;07;28;29 - 00;07;52;04
Speaker 4
1000000%? The Bible? It's a living word. I read it every single day and every new season. I write notes and in the past I moved down to my kiddos, but I learn something new every single day and it's mind blowing. How much goodness is really something special? Someone. Thank you so much for taking time to talk to literary.
00;07;52;16 - 00;07;53;24
Speaker 4
Thank you very much, guys.
00;07;53;24 - 00;08;20;23
Speaker 1
Thanks thanks again to Caitlin for taking time out of his convention schedule and taking a little break from meeting with fans to talk to me about the 20 years of Twilight and what it was like to be part of that franchise. In the film side of things. Getting to watch him interact with fans was so much fun and clearly, as you saw, he's still very much so loves all of the cast members and they're so close and it was so beautiful to watch them interact with each other throughout the weekend.
00;08;21;01 - 00;08;38;28
Speaker 1
